Religious sentiments subservient to fundamental right to life and health of citizenry: Supreme Court
A bench comprised of Justices RF Nariman and BR Gavai ruled that the state of Uttar Pradesh cannot proceed with the Kanwar Yatra, particularly when the Union Government has spoken out against it. Religious emotions are subordinate to the basic right to life and health, the Supreme Court said in a case brought on its own initiative against the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to allow the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government rethink its decision to permit the physical Kanwar Yatra. The court further noted that the kanwar yatra had been cancelled by the state of Uttarakhand.
