Union Cabinet meeting takes key decisions
The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 6.29-lakh-crore relief package proposed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to help the pandemic-hit economy on Wednesday. PM Modi held a virtual meeting with Union Ministers and unanimously took some important decisions. Among other decisions, the cabinet has approved an additional Rs 19,041 crore to provide broadband internet cover to all village panchayats. The Cabinet has endorsed a BharatNet implementation plan based on a PPP (public-private partnership) model to reach populated villages across 16 states in the nation. This implies that the government has enlisted the help of the business sector to improve broadband connection and generate money from the service. The Union Cabinet has also approved some key changes in the power sector. The central government has planned to offer free power to farmers for the next four years.
