Twitter loses legal protection over non-compliance with new IT rules
The Central government said on Wednesday that the microblogging platform Twitter has lost its legal indemnity status in India after it failed to comply with new Information Technology (IT) rules. Now, criminal cases can be filed against the Twitter if the content is in violation of laws.
The police officials will have authority to call Twitter’s India MD and its representatives for investigation. Already, a case was registered against Twitter in Uttar Pradesh. The Centre stated that Twitter had delayed appointment of Chief Compliance Officer as per new IT rules.
