Oral drug effective against Covid in Hamsters; Now in final stages of human trials- Study
Scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US and the University of Plymouth in the UK found that MK-4482, also called Molnupiravir can decrease novel coronavirus levels in hamsters. According to the reports, it is in the final stages of human trials in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Molnupiravir is an orally administered antiviral drug, that was initially developed to treat influenza.
The study conducted on hamsters has also revealed that the said drug can also decrease damage it causes to lungs. The researchers have also observed that MK-4482 has been shown to inhibit the replication of other related human coronaviruses.
