Although the new coronavirus strain found in South Africa and the UK has been reported to transmit faster, there is no evidence of it causing severe disease or mortality, said Head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Ghebreyesus, during a press conference with WHO officials in Geneva on Monday.
“The UK has reported that this new variant transmits more easily but there is no evidence so far that it is more likely to cause severe disease or mortality,” he briefed the journalists, urging to double down on public health basics to suppress the virus effectively. More than 40 countries banned the UK travelling after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a coronavirus mutation that is up to 70 percent more transmissible.
