Cyclone Nivar turns very severe, to hit between TN-Puducherry coasts by today evening
Cyclone Nivar is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours and cross the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram on Wednesday evening, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It will cross the coasts with a wind speed of 120-145 km per hour.
At present, Nivar is located 330 km southeast of Chennai. A red alert has been sounded in the states of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh. NDRF teams were dispatched to coastal districts for taking up rescue operations. People are being evacuated from low lying areas to safe places.
