India counters UN rights chief criticism on alleged misuse of FCRA on NGOs
The Indian government on Tuesday brushed aside remarks on alleged misuse of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). The remarks were made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) Michelle Bachelet. The Centre said that India was a democratic polity based on the rule of law and an independent judiciary.
The Indian government also reminded the UN human rights chief that framing of laws was a sovereign prerogative. Bachelet had called for India to review the Act, alleging that FCRA was being used to deter or punish NGOs for human rights reporting.
