NASA launched a Lunar Loo challenge on Thursday to attract innovative ideas to address the issue of space-based human waste management. Contestants are expected to win a $35,000 cash prize, which will be shared among the top three teams submitting a toilet model that will work not only on microgravity but also on lunar gravity.
The lander will carry astronauts from the lunar orbit down to the Moon's surface as part of NASA's Artemis program which aims to send the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024. It means that the toilet on board must be adaptable: it needs to work in space, where the astronauts would be weightless, and even when astronauts encounter one-sixth of Earth's gravity on the lunar surface.
