Nirbhaya Verdict: Why judge broke the nib of his pen after pronouncing DEATH sentence
Whenever a Judge passes a death sentence, he breaks the nib of his pen, it is generally observed. It is generally practiced to express his compulsions for passing the death sentence, under compelling circumstances. It is made to ensure that nobody ever commits such a heinous offense. In the 2012's Nirbhaya case also, the judge while pronouncing death warrant to all four accused, has broken the nib of his pen. The custom of breaking the nib of the pen after awarding a death sentence has been followed by Indian judges since from British Raj.
