There are 41 varieties of tamarind being grown in Dr. Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy Horticulture Research Institute in Ananthapur district. One such variety that was developed by the local scientists is Red Tamarind or Anantha Rudira. The fruit is red in colour as the name suggests. It is highly nutritious with abundant calcium and antioxidants, unlike the normal tamarind, the scientists said. Also it is a high yeilding variety. As such, there is a great demand for it in the farming community, they added.
