Supreme Court (SC), hearing the petition of historian, Romila Thapar and others against the arrest of five civil rights activists from different locations in the country, said that they should be kept under house arrest until its next hearing on September 6th. Dissent is the safety valve of democracy, the SC said. If it is not allowed, the pressure cooker will burst, it added. SC questioned Maharashtra Police as to why they arrested the activists nine months after Koregaon violence. It issued notices to Maharashtra government and its state police.
