Right to Equality hit as only men are punished for adultery: SC - Etv

A five-judge bench of Supreme Court (SC), headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI), Deepak Mishra, said that punishing only men for adultery violates the right to equality before law under Article 14 of the Constitution. The bench was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Joseph Shine. His counsellor quoted Section 497, which says that the man who committed adultery should be jailed for five years, while the woman should go scot free. This is inconceivable in today's world, he said.
