Indian Army is mulling abolishing all cantonments in the country and convert them to exclusive military stations. The idea is to save funds for defence. As of now, the Army is maintaining all the cantonment areas, including provision of civic amenities and keep the surroundings clean. However, it will be handing over the areas to the respective local municipalities. A proposal to this effect has been submitted to Union Home Ministry, by Army chief, Bipin Rawat and is awaiting its consent.
