The issue of farm loan waiver, a promise made by the Janata Dal (Secular) in the recent polls in Karnataka, has now come to haunt the state Chief Minister (CM), Kumaraswamy. He has already announced that he is at the 'mercy of the Congress.' The total loans to be waived has been put at Rs. 53,000 crs. While this is so, it is doubtful if the Congress will accept this burden on the state exchequer. Now, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), headed by former CM, Yeddyurappa has given an ultimatum that the government waive farm loans within a week. This has added fuel to fire.
