A five-judge bench of Supreme Court (SC), headed by Chief Justice, Dipak Misra, upheld the fundamental Right to die with dignity. It allowed passive euthanasia, albeit under strict guidelines. The SC passed this verdict while hearing a Private Interest Litigation (PIL) by an NGO, Common Cause. It said that if a person is under severe pain and prefers to die, then medical boards can examine the plea and allow euthanasia, after considering all aspects. The SC gave elaborate directions on who and how this should be carried out.
