On Sunday morning, passersby stood curiously staring at the brand new refrigerator that popped up overnight on a pavement near the Besant Nagar Tennis Club in Chennai. Branded with a sticker that says 'Ayyamittu Unn' (Eat After You Serve), the 'community refrigerator' on the sidewalk belongs to no one in particular but is for everyone in general. It was set up by an orthodontist, at a cost of less than Rs. 50,000. Soon people started the stocking the fridge, with fruits and foodstuffs. No sooner than that, it was empty.
