At least 4,637 primary schools in Telangana State will face closure, if the government goes ahead with it's plan to merge primary schools that have a low student strength. It plans to merge one or two primary schools in the same area, in to one and offered to give Rs. 300 towards transportation to each student, who has to come to school from a distance. This proposal is being opposed by educationists and poor parents alike. Instead of improving the facilities in the schools, the plan to removing them altogether will have an adverse effect, they said. Prominent educationist Chukka Ramaiah said that the government should go to each poor household and find out why they are not sending students to government schools.
