Surgeon General Vivek Murthy resigned at the request of the White House after assisting in the transition to the Trump administration. He was appointed by Obama in 2014. Murthy was opposed by GOP Senators during his confirmation over his position on gun violence. He referred to it as a public health issue. Department of Health and Human Services Spokeswoman Alleigh Marre said in a statement that Secretary Tom Price thanked him for his dedicated service to the nation. The White House referred a request for comment on Murthy’s resignation to HHS.
