The main reason for Chandrababu to change his stance on special status to Andhra Pradesh (AP) is, believe it or not, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is true, though incredible, that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will do something for the states, only if it sees anything useful for itself in the long run. It has worked very cleverly to silence the states in this matter, by replacing 5-year plans to Niti Ayog. Modi is the chief of Niti Ayog. Whatever promises are made or unmade is all under his direction and the state leaders have to just play along. Thus, the fate of special status or package hangs in balance.
