GST paves way for smoother inter-state cargo supplies

Sat, Aug 06, 2016, 12:13 PM
Whatever maybe the reservations and considerations for the Goods and Services Tax Bill, the amendments for which were passed by the Rajya Sabha a couple of days ago, the inter-State truck movement would be faster, save for the toll collection.

According to World Bank senior vice-president, Kaushik Basu, the goods movement would be speeded up with no miscellaneous tax collections at check posts. There could, however, be toll and charges collection midway.

Even so, it is for the governmens to benefit from the GST and speed up inter-state movement of cargo.

Basu suggests to the governments that it is for them to ensure that the taxes are collected at the starting point and the end point, without harassing the truck drivers midway.

He says the GST would also cut down on bureaucratic costs, and it is a step towards that end.

The World Bank chief economist cautions that the GST has long-term benefits that will far outweigh short-term price hikes.
