Ayes just keep increasing on the GST amendments

Thu, Aug 04, 2016, 11:00 AM
The voting on BJP's pet Goods and Services Taxes Bill just kept the number of ayes going up and up, pleasantly surprising the Congress members and Deputy Chiarman of the Rajya Sabha PJ Kurien, while the grim-faced ruling party members were looking at the figures on the electronic display board in sheer disbelief.

When the voting on the first amendment to the GST Bill was called, it showed 197 ayes and no nos. The voting was taken after the AIADMK members walked out of the House.

When the voting was called for the second amendment, 200 members said ayes and none against.

When the voting on the third amendment was called, 201 members said ayes and none against.

The Congress senior leader, Anand Sharma, was pleasantly surprised at the increasing number. He wondered how it could happen when all the doors were closed and lobbies were cleared before the voting took place.

Therein lies the tale. In the other House of the Lok Sabha, all doors were locked and lobbies cleared and amid smoke and pandemonium the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill was passed. The doors of the House being locked always spells magic for the Congress members.

Anand Sharma in fact said that four mysterious members had come and voted for the GST Bill after the doors were locked and lobbies cleared.

The Chair explained away the increase in numbers by suggesting that the figures may have to be corrected.

Adding to the mystery, when the voting was called for a further amendment the electronic board showed 203 ayes.

Kurien had the last laugh, saying the number was likely to further go up for another amendment. His clairvoyance proved true, because voting was called for another amendment, and the board showed 205 ayes. Kurien, too, recognized the magic and said as much before declaring 203 as the final figure.

The ayes have it, the ayes have it, and the GST Bill is passed with amendments.
