Sidhu blasts BJP for letting Jaitley contest from Amritsar

Mon, Jul 25, 2016, 01:00 PM
Former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, addressing the first press conference after his resignation from the Rajya Sabha, said on Monday that the reason he resigned was because he was told to stay away from Punjab. "Sidhu, Punjab se door raho," he was told by the BJP leadership. He was asked to contest from Kurukshetra in Haryana and leave Amritsar for Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the 2014 poll.

Alluding to a bird returning to its nest, sidhu said: "How can I turn my face away from Punjab? Punjab is my home, I cannot leave Punjab. I cannot abandon the people who voted for me."

Sidhu was told to contest the 2014 polls from Kurukshetra. `How can I abandon the people who voted for me? Punjab is my home, I cannot leave Punjab. Have been told to stay away 3-4 times. At least tell me my crime. Party (BJP) is not above Punjab. Sidhu will be there for whatever is good for Punjab. Always wanted to serve Punjab and Amritsar."

Amritsar was the bone of contention between Sidhu and the BJP. In the event, Jaitley who contested from Amritsar was roundly defeated in the 2014 parliamentary election.
