Deloitte Monsoon Regatta to begin with foreign sailors

Thu, Jul 14, 2016, 05:18 PM
The Yacht Club of Hyderabad (YCH) has announced the Deloitte Monsoon Regatta, the 8th edition of one of the largest sailing extravaganzas in India attracting over 100 entries, including one from Germany and one from the UK, giving it its first international flavour.

The Monsoon Regatta is a National Ranking Championship that was held here in the Sub-Junior category and the top sailors congregate in large numbers, especially after the conclusion of the Telangana State Open Regatta that concluded on July 13. The Deloitte Monsoon Regatta has grown leaps and bounds, thanks to the support of the Hyderabad Marriott for the last 6 years.

The YCH has strong tie-ups with NGOs like Project 511, Naandi Foundation, LSN Foundation, Rotary Deccan and Akaanksha and is the only event where economically challenged kids from all these foundations, including some from Mumbai, have been trained and will be participating in large numbers. With 30 such kids rubbing shoulders with the elite, this will be a regatta to remember.

“Being located on the banks of the Hussain Sagar makes it a privilege to associate ourselves with an event that focuses on the quality of water here. Both the Monsoon Regatta and Monsoon Jazz welcome the season and we are happy to see the children supported by the Yacht Club grow in their sailing and educational careers,” said Sharad Datta GM of Hyderabad Marriott.

“We are proud to support the twin goals of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, to bring awareness to our polluted water bodies and serve economically challenged children thru their motto ‘Dignity Through Sports’,“ said Chairman of Deloitte India P R Ramesh in a special message.

The top-seeded team in the Omega Nationals will be the Indian Navy that is featuring a team helmed by Imo Lemnok with crew Gaurva Randhawa. A Multi National team with Mark Schamp of Germany and Robert Oates from the UK will sail with Indian crew.

Hyderabad will be represented by Rishab Nayar, Tanish Desai and Praveen Kumar the first two being champions in the Laser Class and have recently proved their class by winning the Laser events at Hyderabad.
