SC strikes down YCP plea on defections

Fri, Jul 08, 2016, 12:05 PM
The Suprme Court on Friday struck down a plea by the YCP to declare as invalid the defection of over 20 of their MLAs to the ruling TDP, saying the decision was not in the jurisdiction of the court but that of the Speaker of the State Assembly.

On the other hand, the court advised the YCP to file the case in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. It expressed the view that the High Court would complete the case as early as possible. However, the court refused to give any order to the High Court.

Whatever the constitutional provisions, the case assumes urgency for the political party as it faces greater threat of defections from its MLAs ranks, when 15 more are said to be on the way out.
