The Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) organized the 10th Statistics Day Celebrations in recognition of the notable contribution made by Prof. P C Mahalanobis in the fields of economic planning and statistical development in the post-independent era. The theme of the celebrations was “Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare” in view of the current focus by the Government on farmer-centric programs and development of agriculture and rural statistics.

On this occasion, the valedictory function of the “Orientation Program for Public Servants in the Context of Telangana”, sponsored by Planning Department, Government of Telangana, and executed by Dr. MCR HRD Institute was also held.

Vinod K Agrawal, Director-General, Dr. MCR HRD Institute & E O Chief Secretary to Government of Telangana, advised the participants to use the knowledge gained by them in the Orientation Program to serve people more efficiently. He added that the Institute would establish a Centre for Telangana Studies dedicated to the conceptualization and execution of the Orientation Programs in a scientific fashion.

B P Acharya, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government, Planning Department, said good data and statistics were indispensable for informed decision-making by all actors in society.

He stated that as Telangana State embarks on implementing the agenda for sustainable development, reliable and timely statistics and indicators are more important than ever. Ramachandrudu Tejavat Naik, IAS (Retd.), Special Representative, Govt. of Telangana, New Delhi, urged the employees to guide the political leadership by providing authentic data and sharing the truth, without any fear, instead of coming under their spell and telling them what they want to listen. “The employees are an integral part of the Government apparatus. Failure to provide dependable information and professional advice will have disastrous consequences for the society at large”, he said.

He advised them to use their expertise in formulating schemes that can result in development in order to realize the goal of Golden Telangana. He added that the Chief Minister is fully committed to the development agenda and advised them to be proactive in strengthening his hands.

AK Goel, IAS (Retd.), Advisor to Government, Planning and Energy, said that mere training of employees is not enough and added that it should be accompanied by a high-level of motivation on their part to contribute to the development of Telangana.

Dr. GR Reddy, IES (Retd.), Advisor to Government, Finance, said that mind-boggling changes have been taking place in the discipline of statistics. He, therefore, advised Government employees to keep themselves abreast of these developments to remain as true professionals.
