Centre seeks AP power utilities’ help to motivate DISCOMs of other States

Hyderabad, June 26: Impressed by the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government in efficiently managing the power sector by adopting latest technological and IT innovations, the Union Ministry of Power, is seeking the cooperation and support of the power utilities of AP to share their best IT practices in extending value added services to the consumers and motivating DISCOMS of other States like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and so on to follow suit so that major national objectives in Power Sector can be fulfilled across the country.

Consequent to the proceedings of Power Ministers Conference held in Goa, where major milestones of AP Power sector like launching of EPDCL's mobile App, smart metering, online bill payment and electricity ATM, etc., which are being implementing in EPDCL jurisdiction, have been highlighted by the Principal Secretary Energy I&I Dept Ajay Jain with proofs and the same had impressed the representatives of all the States especially Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of State for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Sources, a top officer of Power Ministry requested Prl. Secy, Energy, GoAP to spare the services of R. Mutyalaraju, CMD, EPDCL, occasionally, for sharing IT initiatives of EPDCL with other DISCOMs in India. In response, Govt. of AP has agreed to the request of GOI for extending the skilled services of CMD on best IT practices of EPDCL on quarterly basis.

The ultimate objective of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, in making the AP Power Utilities as No.1 in the country and providing world class power supply to the consumers is being fulfilled one after the other and the IT initiatives of EPDCL are a step in this direction. EPDCL has also won laurels at the national level for its App that provides consumers with power supply data. World Bank has also Sanctioned Rs. 720 crore for underground cabling in Vizag to ensure that power supply is not interrupted if natural calamities like cyclones hit the State. Power supply infrastructure that can withstand cyclones like Hudhud is being put in place in Vizag.

Before leaving for China as part of the high-level delegation's visit along with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Prl Secretary Ajay Jain while disclosing the above details, issued instructions to CMD, APEPDCL to prepare an exclusive and comprehensive report to be submitted to the to Union Govt. on the following unique achievements.

Reduction of Aggregate Technical & Commercial Losses (AT& C) to 5.48 % in 2015-16 as against 6.32% in 2014-15. Reduction of Each 1% of AT & C loss will save around Rs.300 Crs per annum. II. Improving the metered sales to as high as 81.67% for increasing the revenue. III. Achieving revenue collection efficiency of 100% throughout the year. IV. Introducing Mobile APP for consumers -- “Eastern Power APP”, to browse the details of power supply position from anywhere in the world. V. Spot registration of new electricity connections, at the door-steps of the applicant by the field officers for releasing immediate new electricity connection. Adoption of GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking system for replacement of sick Distribution Transformers with new DTRs for the benefit of farmers/others. VII. Outage Management System for ensuring immediate restoration of supply during break downs. VIII. SMS alerts to the consumers mobiles on the issue of electricity bills and receipt of payments and other updates. IX. A pilot project of online spot billing through remote modems which saves time and resources for the DISCOM and as well as the consumers.

On the occasion, Revu Muthyala Raju, who was the topper of IAS batch 2007 in the country, thanked the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and Prl. Secretary, Energy, I&I and CMD/APTRANSCO for their encouragement and support significantly improving the performance of APEPDCL and disclosed that EPDCL plans to achieve an ambitious turnover of Rs 10,000 crore during 2016-17 as against the existing turnover of about Rs 7,740 crore.
