India, Pak in same group gives ICC chief massive kick

Thu, Jun 02, 2016, 11:25 AM
The Internatioal Cricket Council has admitted it had tweaked the draws in the 2017 Champions Trophy to put India and Pakistan together in the same group in the interests of the popularity of the game.

The draws as per the rules would have put the two teams in separate groups, but the ICC tweaked the draws to ensure the Sub-Continental rivals were in the same group.

An India-Pakistan cricket match is expected to be watched by 100 crore people.

The two teams would now be meeting in the group fixtures at Edgbaston on June 4, 2017.

The ICC chief executive, Dave Richardson, argued, `It is hugely important from ICC point of view. It's massive around the world and the fans have come to expect it as well. It's fantastic for the tournament because it gives it a massive kick.'

Richardson denied that the tweaking impacted the integrity of any tournament.
