Bride fails virginity test, gets divorced in 48 hours
A Nasik groom divorced his wife within 48 hours of marriage on the ground that the bride was not a virgin. The virginity test was conducted on the bride with the connivance of the community elders. The elders agreed to spread a white bedsheet on the nuptial bed. After the nuptials the bedsheet was to be shown to the elders. As the orders were carried out, the following morning the elders did not find any blood marks on the sheet. They agreed to consent the divorce. The groom thus divorced his wife within 48 hours of marriage. The girl's side protested that the bride was undergoing training as a policewoman and that she had to do running, cycling and long jump kind of exercises. But it had no effect on the elders or the groom. The police have now intervened in the matter because the victim was one of their own trainees. They have decided to give counselling to the groom about the realities of life and against such rituals.
