Debut centurion Deepak Shodhan passes away

Mon, May 16, 2016, 06:21 PM
Test cricketer of yester years, Deepak Shodhan, who made a century on debut, died in Ahmedabad on Monday. He was 87.

In his debut Test with Pakistan in 1952, India was down 179 for 6, when left-handed Deepak helped the team reach a comfortable score with Dattu for a seventh-wicket stand of 86. In his score of 110, he hit 18 fours.

He walked in at No 8 in the Eden Gardens Test, and walked away with a century.

The acting captain, Lala Amarnath, said while picking his team, `Bring me that tall Gujarati boy who did so well at the nets.' In the event, Deepak proved himself.

Deepak Shodhan's son, tall like himself, would say that his father had told him to take cricket as a game and not as a career. Obviously, the son took his famous father's advice seriously.
