India-Nepal ties sour as Beijing puts up fifth column

Sat, May 07, 2016, 03:13 PM
Beijing is playing the fifth column in the India-Nepal relations with the Communist government of KP Sarma Oli in power in Khatmandu.

First the Oli government scrapped the visit to India by first Nepal woman President Vidyadevi Bhandari on the eve of the trip which was to start on May 9. Second, the Communist government recalled its ambassador to New Delhi, Deep Kumar Upadhyay. The first has bearing on the second.

After scrapping the Nepal President's visit, the Oli government did not inform its ambassador about the change in the President's schedule. When he had arranged the meeting of the President with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ambassador Upadhyay wanted to know why the President's visit was cancelled without informing him.

Upadhyay told the Communist Prime Minister that such knee-jerk decisions would do no good for Nepal. Oli got angry and told him to quit from the position. Not only that on Friday night the communist Cabinet met and decided to recall its ambassador in Delhi.

Where was the rub between India and Nepal, and what draws Khatmandu to Beijing? While during the repeated Nepal earthquakes, India did great service to the Nepalese without any preference, China, too, did some work.

However, the essential supplies from India to Nepal were stalled during the Madeshi stir in the border with India. The Oli government holds the ambassador as responsible for the standstill during the Madeshi stir. Taking advantage of the situation, Beijing sent 3000 trucks comprising essential commodities, which was endearing to the Communist government.

This is a lesson to New Delhi, too, to see the broader picture and not go by envoys alone. In the event, India has antagonised the only Hindu kingdom in the world till recently.
