eNAM towards transparent pan-India agricultural market

Thu, Apr 14, 2016, 05:03 PM
Has the Narendra Modi government cracked the problem of the middleman choking fair prices to farmers and giving them adequate prices for their produce?

While it may yet be too far, there will be at least transparency with the launch of eNAM (National Agricultural Market). The eNAM proposes to integrate 585 regulated wholesale markets all over the country or Agricultural Produce Market committees under one electronic platform.

Announcing this, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said on Wednesday that eNAM would ensure that farmers get competitive prices and consumers would get stable prices and also the commodities would be available.

eNam is projected to be pan-India electronic trading portal for the national market for farm commodities.

While there are 7,000 wholesale markets in the country, States selected for the pilot project include Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

To start with, a dozen commodities, including chana, castor seed, paddy, wheat, maize, turmeric, onion, mustard, mahua flower and shelling pea would be traded on the platform.

After it is fully developed, the portal is poised to be as big as Amazon.
