Internet & mobiles snapped in Kashmir as rumours egg on Handwara mobs

Thu, Apr 14, 2016, 12:34 PM
Aware that the Handwara incident was fuelled by rumours in Kashmir, the authorities in the valley on Thursday scrapped mobile and internet services to check the spread of further rumours and violence.

The Handwara incident related to the molestation of a young girl by her neighbourhood boys, which the rumour mongers had attributed to an Army jawan.

While the truth was being aired by the girl in Youtube, the rumour-mongering mobs went on the rampage in Handwara attacking the army bunker in the central market there, leading to a firing. The separatists took advantage of the firing and also fired some rounds. In all four people, including an old woman, succumbed to their bullet injuries.

Mobile and internet services would not be available in Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts in the valley.

Residents of Srinagar and South Kashmir also reported that they were not able to access internet.

The authorities said the move was temporary and the internet services would be restored as soon as the situation returns to normal.
