`Ten (more) Years' & Hongkong people are sitting ducks

Wed, Apr 06, 2016, 12:17 PM
What will be the fate of the English-oriented people of Hongkong under the Beijing regime in 2025? Two decades down the line after the British colonialists left them in the Chinese lurch, the people hold only dread instead of hope.

These Hongkong fears were clearly brought out by a film, `Ten Years,' which is a low-budget, independent movie.

The film depicts local gangs attacking the natives of Hongkong for speaking Cantonese and not the official Mandarin. It brings out the fears of the outnumbered people following unification with China.

`Ten Years' depicted the fears of the people of Hongkong towards the Red Giant, one of the film's directors, Chow Kwan-wai, said.

The film on a persecuted people has won Asia's top awards. It won the Best Film award at the Hong Kong Film Festival on Sunday last. The film is expected to be shown in Taiwan, Singapore and America and Italian film festivals.

Beijing daily `Global Times' gave all the awards but blocked the Best Film award. Censors in the mainland have banned the film.

The film was made with $75,000, with many of the characters playing their role for free.
