Railway Coolies are Sahayaks hereafter

Thu, Feb 25, 2016, 01:49 PM
Coolies will be called 'Sahayaks' hereafter following the presentation of the Railway Budget 2016 by Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday.

Coolie of the Railways had been made famous by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The film at that time had grossed over Rs 1 crore in each terrirtory.

Megastar Chiranjeevi also made Coolie but of the market variety. In the film, Bose (Chiranjeevi) is a very patriotic man who fights for the rights of the local market workers against Aatma (Sharat Saxena), the underworld don. Seeing his dedication for helping the working poor, the Chief Minister (Gummadi Venkateswara Rao) honours him.

Coolie is generally referred to the licensed workers in red found in railway stations. They do the portage, carrying bags and trunks of travelling passengers to the means of transport at railway stations.

The railway Coolies' lot had improved a good deal since Amitabh's role. They are since demanding higher and higher portage from the travelling public.

They are coolies no more, thanks to Suresh Prabhu who has done away with the colonial term.
