Reliance to relocate 2,400 MW Samalkot power plant to Bangladesh

Vijayawada, Aug 07: Reliance power has decided to relocate its 2,400 MW gas-based power plant in Samalkot in East Godavari district to Bangladesh. According to reports, the company will shift the machinery to Bangladesh within in six months. The plant is the biggest gas based power plant in south India. Though the Rs 10,000 crore project was ready for commissioning, non availability of gas, delayed power production. Eight gas turbines of a combined capacity of 1,600 MW were installed at Samalkot in 2012 after Power Ministry assured gas supply. Earlier, Reliance had thought of keeping equipment for generation of 800 MW power in the plant and to shift 1,600 MW equipment to Bangladesh, but the plan was shelved. GE and other international companies supplied the equipment and even US President has mentioned the plant in his speeches several times.
