Catherine Keenan, a former journalist with Sydney Morning Herald was named Australia's 'Local Hero' for her contribution to education of youth. She left her plush job to start a not-for-profit organisation, Sydney Story Factory, through which she trained thousands of marginalised students, in creative writing. Thereby she spurred their higher education and academic achievement. Local Hero award recognises contributions by Australians to their local communities.
