How is that onions, that cost between Rs. 35 and Rs. 40 a kg at present, brought only losses to the farmers and customers? The real profiteers by the onion price hike are the middlemen. The farmers get pittance for their labour, while middlemen buy onions for a less price and sell them at a high price, sometimes outside the state. This year, because of lack of rains, the crop dried up, leaving the farmers high and dry.
