Analysts at the National Institute of Hydrology have found that there are high levels of E.Coli bacteria in Godavari river water. They have cautioned the pilgrims bathing in the river during Puskharams. While normally there are 500 colonies of E.Coli bacteria in 100 mm water, there are 5,000 colonies of the bacteria in Godavari water, the analysts said. E.Coli is resistant to medicines, they added.
