Mushrooming private medical colleges are trading medical seats for nearly Rs. 1 crore. Throwing norms to the winds, they have increased the number of seats in the 'B' and 'C' categories and are charging over double the fees this year. So much so that medical education has become unreachable for merit students and the middle classes. Meanwhile, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has decreased the number of seats in private colleges and shut down those that have no minimum facilities or proper faculty.
