India is a country that follows Sanathana Dharma and there is a tradition of offering Harathis to the rivers since ancient times and this is the basis for present river festivals the world over. Rivers that helped the farmers to cultivate their lands and quenched the thirst of millions are gradually losing their sheen in India. River Godavari is generally offered 16 Harathis, while Krishna is offered 11. Harathi celebrations were conducted officially by former chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy's government.
