Naxal-turned-gangster Nayeem dead in gun battle with police

Hyderabad, Aug.8: A former Naxalite turned gangster Nayeemuddin, wanted in over 100 criminal cases, including the sensational killing of senior IPS officer K S Vyas, was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Shadnagar town of Mahbubnagar district in Telangana State.

Speaking to media persons after inspecting the spot of shoot-out this morning, Mahbubnagar district superintendent of police Rama Rajeshwari said on receipt of the information from some locals that a white Ford Endeavor was moving in a suspicious manner in the Millennium township, the police rushed to the spot and chased the vehicle. The occupants in the vehicle, instead of stopping, started firing at the police from inside prompting them to return fire in self-defence. Two persons were found dead at the spot.

The SP said the deceased was believed to be notorious gangster Nayeemuddin, who was wanted in some 100 cases of murder, extortion and land settlements. He remained elusive to the police for a long time. She said the police one AK-47 from the spot along with the Ford Endeavor (AP 28 DR 5859) which was registered in the name of one Vaddepalli Narsing Rao. Director General of Police Anurag Sharma confirmed the death of Nayeem.

On the other hand, the police surrounded an apartment in Narsingi in the Old City suspecting that Nayeem’s wife and other family members were hiding there. Nayeemuddin known as Nayeem was reportedly staying in the house of one Basha in the Millennium Township in Shadnagar town along with his ten followers. Police said Nayeem of Bhongir town of Nalgonda district joined the dreaded People’s War Group in 1989 and physically liquidated several Naxalite leaders. Nayeem hit the headlines for the first time after killing Maoist activist balladeer Belli Lalitha and turned into a police covert.

He was arrested in several cases but gave a slip to the police 11 times. On January 27, 1993, Nayeem shot dead senior IPS officer Vyas and surrendered to the police. He was the principal accused in the murder cases of former Maoist Sambasivudu, Konapuri Ramulu, Patolla Govardhan Reddy, Civil Liberties Rights leader Purushotham and Ajeem.
After his surrender to police, Nayeem formed a gang and began extortions and settlements in a big way. For over a decade, Nayeem indulged in a series of criminal activities and targeted surrendered Naxalites, civil liberties leader. It is said the police department used him to nab or kill other Naxalite leaders.

Nayeem openly declared Naxals and police as his enemies. The gangster, with his Naxalite training and organizational tactics, managed to build his teams for his underworld activities and gradually became a Dawood Ibrahim of Hyderabad. He was reportedly involved in several land settlements and amassed money and properties.

Two TRS MLAs reportedly complained against Nayeemuddin’s extortion and land deals in Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda district to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. They had also complained that they had received veiled threats from Nayeemuddin not to intervene in his activities. Police provided bullet proof cars to the two MLAs.
