Mumbai rainfall causes concern, floods feared

Fri, Aug 05, 2016, 01:12 PM
Metropolitan cities are increasingly facing the threat of floods in the country. Last year it was the fate of Chennai, when the southern city went under sheet of water, bringing life to standstill for a fortnight.

This year Delhi and Bangalore suffered floods, but not to the extent of Chennai. Now it is the turn of Mumbai. Following the rains in the last 24 hours, there have been continuous traffic jams all over the city.

The weather office has warned Mumbai of floods and heavy rain in the next 2 days. It also said that the stagnant waters in various suburbs could turn into floods with more rainfall.

Mumbai Mayor Sanjay More has decided to shift people from low-lying areas in various localities to safety.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has alerted the revenue officials to gear up for the situation. Boats, motor boats and life jackets are being despatched to various localities to meet with the situation.

A couple of years ago Mumbai went under water, with six feet of water flowing in the streets. It was the worst situation they had faced in many years when the metropolis came to a standstill for days together.

A forgotten river Kurla surfaced that year to remind the people of Mumbai not to mess with natural water courses.
