Anandiben quits, Vijay Rupani in the saddle

Wed, Aug 03, 2016, 11:02 AM
Faced with agitations on the Patels and Dalits fronts, Anandiben Patel submitted her resignation on Wednesday, ending speculation on the issue, and putting the unfriendly BJP ledership in a dilemma as to her successor.

The party, however, put up a brave front, with Union minister Venkaiah Naidu hailing Anandiben's services in various capacities for the past 18 years. She had resigned from the chief ministership in order to encourage young leadership, as she would be attaining the age of 75, which is cut-off for party activities.

Venkaiah also announced that she would shortly be meeting the Governor and hand over her resignation.

Meanwhile, the BJP leadership on Wednesday appointed Vijay Rupani as Chief Minister of Gujarat. He has been the party's top choice, and a favourite of party chief Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Chief Minister post was to initially to go to Amit Shah. But, apparently, his need in Central politics was more important than in Gujarat.
