Gouravelli farmers join Medak ryots to demand justice

Tue, Jul 19, 2016, 06:15 PM
Even before the controversy on Mallannasagar reservoir was resolved, the villagers of Gouravelli in Karimnagar district have raised their voice against increasing the reservoir height and causing injustice to them.

A delegation of villagers met BJP Telangana president Dr K Laxman at his party office and submitted a memorandum, urging him to support their demands and ensure justice to the victims who lost their lands. The villagers stated that the government had acquired 2,200 acres in 2009 for the construction of a reservoir and failed to provide rehabilitation to 100 displaced persons so far.

Now the TRS government was trying to acquire another 2,200 acres from the villagers in the name of increasing the height of reservoir to 8.4 tmc from 1.4 tmc storage. They expressed concern that the police were harassing the villagers to part with their land.

Condemning the forcible acquisition of lands without permission of the villagers, Dr Laxman alleged that the action of the TRS government showed that the government had scant respect for the law. While the police were harassing displaced persons of Mallannasagar reservoir in Medak district, on the other, they were intimidating victims of Gourivelli and Gudatipalli village farmers in Karimangar district.

Speaking to media, the State BJP chief said the State government should not acquire land forcibly from the farmers and demanded that the State government initiate measures to rehabilitate 2009 victims of the Gourvelli reservoir. He said if there was a need of acquiring land for the reservoir, the government should have talks with the farmers of these villagers and lands should be taken under 2013 Land Acquisition Act and not under GO 123.
