Dignity thru Sports triumphs in Telangana Regatta

Wed, Jul 13, 2016, 05:44 PM
There was no touching Harshita Tomar, the 15-year-old from Bhopal who carried the MP flag to the finish line in the first Telangana State Regatta at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad under the auspices of the Telangana Sailing Association.

Harshita won the last race and came 5th in the penultimate race despite being pushed off the line by Navyn Prabhakar that resulted in a protest that was thrown out.

Chitresh Thata of Tamil Nadu, the national champion who just returned from the World Championships in Portugal, was reduced to a bronze behind compatriot Navyn Prabhakar who wins the silver in the Open Category.

Local lad Kankatla Gautam, of The Yacht Club of Hyderabad, who was third behind Durga Prasad and Juhi Desai, rose to the occasion and clocked in a few good races to claim the Telangana State Championship Trophy with a final tally of 84 points, pushing Durga Prasad and Juhi Desai to claim the Gold.

Durga Prasad, who was placed first overall yesterday, finished with a silver and Juhi Desai had to be content with the Bronze. This makes Kankatla Gautham the first- ever Telangana State Sailing Champion in the Sub Junior Category and he joins ranks with Tanishq Desai, who is the State Junior Champion.

Gautham is from Udbhav School at Rasoolpura and comes from a humble background. He lost his father at a very young age and his mother works as an ayamma at KIMS hospital. He learned sailing over the last two years under the ‘Dignity Through Sports” and sailed in the shadow of Durga Prasad his fellow sailor at the club all these years and the two of them are now medallists.

Durga Prasad is also from the Dignity thru Sports program and his mother is a sweeper and his father works as a clerk at an internet store. Gautam and Durga are now setting their eyes at the National Championships in December at Chennai.

The State Girls gold goes to Juhi Desai of DPS followed closely by debutante Mahboobie and G Shyamala who are from a Government schools funded by Naandi Foundation under their Nanhi Kali program.

The weather was typically the Hyderabad Monsoon, tricky and gusty ranging from as low as 6 knots to 23 knots of winds.

“We had great weather and a spectacular series of 12 races and it give us a great sense of satisfaction to have concluded the first-ever Telangana State Sailing Regatta alongside the Yacht Club of Hyderabad," said Lt.Gen KS Rao, President of the Telangana Sailing Association.
Telangana State Regatta medallitsts are as follows:
