Central salaries high, corruption high, services poor, says JP

Loksatta founder-president Dr Jayaprakash Narayan criticized the Centre for hiking wages of its employees without bothering to improve service standards.

In a statement here, JP said the NDA government had raised government employees’ salaries by two to four times above the market. “Corruption was high and the wages are high. But services to the citizens are very poor. Is it a democracy? he asked.

There was a need to introduce reforms in service. Ninety per cent people in the country were working in the unorganized sector without job security. They should all be brought under service rule by introducing reforms, he added.

“The Government never bothered about service delivery while raising wages. We can provide a better healthcare service to the people of the country if we spend one per cent of our national income along with the present allocation”, the Loksatta president opined.

Dr Jayaprakash Narayan said, “Among the world's 50 largest economies, we consistently rank near bottom in education, health, prevention of corruption, services in government offices. The Centre should improve service standards in government offices”, he added.
