Jaitley cuts short China visit fearing Swamy might turn the heat

Mon, Jun 27, 2016, 03:13 PM
Dr Subramaniam Swamy, BJP leader, was not just beating around the bush: He was gunning for the core.

This became clear with Finance Minsiter Arun Jaitley cutting short his China visit and rushing back home to keep his chair safe.

Traditionally the Finance Minister's position was a tough but short-term one. Even in the stable BJP-led NDA government, Dr Swamy sought to make the Finance Ministry like under the Congress governments. He started off by gunning for the RBI Governor, Dr Raghuram Rajan. Although the Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a reassurance to Dr Rajan, he thought better of it, and decided to go back to the academe, not able to withstand Dr Swamy's barbs.

With Rajan going off target, Dr Swamy began angling for the finance adviser to the Prime Minister, Dr Arvind Subramanian. With the BJP leaders putting their foot down in support of Dr Arvind, Dr Swamy went for his bete noir, Jaitley himself. He already made an oblique reference to the sartorial style of Jaitley, calling him hotel waiter when for a change he wore a suit during the foreign trip.

Now visiting Beijing, Jaitley advanced all his appointments and arrived in Delhi on Sunday night itself, when he had two more days of leisurely Beijing visit. He had to participate in the $100 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and a meeting with the People's Bank of China Governor Joe Ksiyochan.

Jaitley advanced all the meetings, finished them and came back home in god speed, fearing Dr Swmay might keep the seat hot for him.
