`Udtha Punjab' to fly into cinemas with censors clearing

Mon, Jun 13, 2016, 10:59 AM
`Udtha Punjab' will fly into theatres anyway. The Central Board of Film Censors has given an A certificate to the film with a minimal 13 cuts against the initial 80-odd cuts it sought to make.

The film makers -- at least the director Anurag Kashyap is an AAP member -- have moved the court that castigated the Censor Board. The Mumbai High Court was to give its critical verdict in a few hours from now. But the board Chairman Pahlaz Nihlani cleared the film with 13 cuts a few hours before the court verdict.

The court, among other things, questioned the credentials of the censor Board itself, saying leave it to the public to judge a film.

Thus the film is set for release as scheduled on June 17.

The political side of the film deals with the raging drug menace in Punjab. It projects the youth as drug addicts, given to using expletives in their conversation. It seeks to go against the Akali rulers as being ambivalent to the drug trade.

`Udtha Punjab' uses the background to make a political comment. AAP is also one the leading parties in the fray next year.
