Centre issues NEET Ordinance putting off entrance exams

Fri, May 20, 2016, 12:38 PM
Even as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was cautioning the Centre against any ordinance to change the NEET, the Union Cabinet on Friday did the very same by postponing the implementation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for medical education.

The Centre bowed down to requests by various state governments against NEET.

By Friday's ordinance, the Central government postponed NEET for a year, which means there won't be common entrance examination for medical education this year.

The Union ministers discussed the matter in the PMO today and decided against NEET for this year. The State governments had also requested the Centre to conduct the medical entrance exams in regional languages.

Kejriwal had cautioned the Centre against issuing any ordinance on the ground that most of the medical colleges in the private sector were in the hands of political leaders and MPs and any act favouring them would mean enriching them with black money. Higher Medical Education is beyond the reach of the common people.

The Supreme Court wanted NEET in place from this year itself. The Centre postponed it by 1 year by the ordinance.
