Arun Jaitley corrects Jairam Ramesh one last time

Fri, May 13, 2016, 03:48 PM
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley noted in the Rajya Sabha his friendships and issues while giving a good word to the outgoing members on Friday.

Noting that six Union ministers were retiring among the 53 members, he said Pavan Varma was a friend from school with whom he shared the desk. Sharad Yadav was a hero from the Engineering College in Jabalpur.

He had a special word for Jairam Ramesh, who claimed he was instrumental in a dozen important pieces of legislation in the UPA regime, including the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill.

Jaitley said Ramesh had come to the House as an economic liberal and turned an economic conservative in 12 years with the Congress.

The leader of the House, Jaitley, made the last correction in a quote by Jairam Ramesh on cricketing great Vijay Merchant. Jaitley said it was not Merchant who made the quote but Sunil Gavaskar who said it was best to retire when the going is good. This was what Jairam Ramesh wanted to say, now that his party would find it difficult to send him back to the Rajya Sabha.

Combined AP sent Jairam Ramesh to the Rajya Sahba, and he was instrumental in splitting the State.

Jaitley said he was sent to the Rajya Sabha for the first time when AB Vajpayee and LK Advani were the top leaders. They advised him to concentrate on issues and not on personalities.

The Leader of the House also talked about double dissolution, as a result of which Australia had to go to polls because both the Houses had to be dissolved there.

In India, such a thing would not happen because the Rajya Sabha is a continuous House.
